(They were slumming when they let me in.) My son and I had the chance
to attend the CA Democratic Convention this past weekend with "official
press/blogger passes". My 8 year old served as my official photographer early
Sunday morning as I wanted to give him the chance to hear Pres. Bill
Clinton address the convention. He was in, of course, after I
bribed him with a pack of Pokemon cards and told him he could get out
of Sunday school. After an hour of waiting and listening to other
random speakers, he said in best 8 year old whiny voice, "I'm bored,
when do we get to go home?" Yikes, so of course a million questions
start to go through my head, "Was I overzealous thinking he would
really get something out of this? Geez! what was I thinkin'? Bill,
hurry it up will ya? We have a baseball game to get to."
So now that it has been two days since the big event and I was
surprised by what he remembered and took away with him regarding all
the hooplah. Here are some of his recollections and lessons learned:
- There seem to be more Obama supporters there, but Hillary signs were nicer.
- SF District Attorney Kamala Harris told everyone a story about when she was a little girl and didn't have money.
- Being a kid has its perks, you can get right up front to take
pictures. Downside is adults stand right in front of you and that
messes up your photos.
- What does the State Board of Equalization do? (My response: Good question!)
- The president tells a lot of jokes - but this 8 year old didn't get them. (Neither did some adults.)
- The president said he had to talk nicely about his wife because he would get in trouble otherwise - what kind of trouble mom? (My response: "Yes, that was another joke you didn't get son.)
- Taking photos is fun, can you get a job doing that when you are an adult? Seems like more fun than being president. (My response: Good point, I'm sure George Bush feels that way!)
It was a once in a life time experience to be part of such
a historic event and I am sure my son will be proud one day to be able
to say that he was there. But until then, he was glad to have a "good
excuse" to be late for his baseball game.
